A lot of our tutors have been wondering what exactly has changed with our new TEMC course and whether they should keep delivering TESMC or move to TEMC. In this email, we give you the lowdown on the changes and what it means for you as a tutor.
Brand new name
Teaching ESL students in mainstream classrooms has become Teaching in English in multilingual classrooms. This new name better reflects the latest developments in the course’s theoretical underpinnings as well as in the practice of teachers and schools around the world.
Optimised structure
The structure of TESMC has been altered to create what is effectively a brand new course. The number of modules is still the same (9) but the number of face-to-face PD hours has been reduced from 25h for TESMC to 23h for TEMC, making it an easier course to implement.
Tailored approach
With TEMC, you are now able to choose the most relevant option for the cohort of teachers and students you are working with:
- Option 1: Primary to Middle Years of schooling
- Option 2: Middle Years to Senior Secondary
For example, Module 6 takes into account the different range of resources needed for developing students’ vocabulary. While both options explore the structure of the nominal group, Option 1 also looks at the language of storytelling for students in the primary to middle years of schooling, while Option 2 delves deeper into the language of abstraction and technicality typical of the later years of schooling.
Better design
The design of TEMC has been enhanced to provide a better user experience for both the tutor and participants.
- There are now videos throughout the course to support the tutor delivery.
- The design of both the Tutor and the Participant manuals has been revamped in order to make them easier to use.
- The digital files such as the PowerPoints and the Readings have also been considerably improved.
Can you deliver TEMC without re-training?
Absolutely. With your experience delivering TESMC and implementing the courses pedagogy in your school, we have no doubt you will be able to successfully deliver TEMC. Although all of the course has been updated and extended, the theoretical underpinnings remain the same.
To access the new TEMC materials, please order Participant manuals via our online shop as you would usually do (minimum first order: 10 manuals), and we will send you a free Tutor set along with your order (1 Tutor manual + 1 Participant manual). We will also send you the updated Digital files (PowerPoint, Readings, Tutor resources, etc.) via email.
Can you re-train?
If you would like to refresh your knowledge and skills, you can attend an upcoming Tutor training course. As such, you are eligible for a 50% discount. Please contact us at info@lexised.com.
Can you still deliver TESMC?
You are welcome to continue delivering TESMC. We still have manuals available for purchase. However, please note that our stock is likely to run out by the end of 2021.
What teachers are saying about TEMC…
TEMC is a must take course for teachers and administrators. The content covered is valuable for all students, not only the ELL students. Mindi Zilli, K-12 ELL Coordinator and K-3 ELL Teacher, Marymount International School Rome
Superb workshop. It has made me re-think our whole school approach towards language. Michelle Golledge, EAL Teacher, ISU MANAGEMENT GMBH
I found the course extremely enjoyable – even though it was online, I don’t think that made a difference. The lessons were engaging and the conversation was flowing. The impact of this course is huge. I have already been considering how to change the lesson planning with more of a literacy focus. Sally Sterk, Teacher, International School of The Hague
